How to make AI text sound human
AI text sounds robotic because of a few habits: stock phrases, sentences that are all the same length, lists of three, filler at the start and end, too much hedging and big words where small ones work. Fix those habits one at a time and the text starts to sound like a person wrote it. The quickest check is to read it out loud and change anything you would never say.

Why does AI text sound robotic?
Most AI drafts are correct and clear. The problem is that they all sound alike. The model reaches for the safest, most common way to say something, so you get the same phrases, the same rhythm and the same shape in every paragraph.
People notice this quickly, even if they can't name what's wrong. The text feels polished but empty, like a brochure. Once a reader gets that feeling, they skim.
The good news is that the habits are easy to spot. Below are the ones that matter most, with a quick fix for each. You don't need to fix all of them in every draft. Start with the first two and you will already hear a difference.
- Stock phrases that show up in every AI draft
- Sentences that are all about the same length
- Ideas grouped in threes out of habit
- Openers and closers that say nothing
- Hedging on every claim
- Big words where small ones would do
Cut the stock phrases
Some phrases appear so often in AI text that they work like a stamp. Think of lines like "plays a crucial role", "in the ever-evolving landscape", "it's important to note that", "a testament to" and "navigate the complexities". None of them is wrong. They are just worn out.
Find each one and ask what it actually means in your sentence. Then write that instead. Often the honest version is shorter and more specific.

Vary sentence length and break the groups of three
AI drafts tend to use sentences of 15 to 25 words, one after another. That steady beat is what makes a paragraph feel flat. Real writing mixes long sentences with short ones. A short one after a long one lands harder.
Lists of three are the other rhythm problem. "Fast, reliable and secure." "Plan, build and launch." One group of three is fine. Five in a page sounds like a template. Keep the items that matter and drop the one you added to fill the slot. Sometimes two is right. Sometimes one.

Remove filler openers and closers
AI loves to warm up before it says anything. "Great question!" "In today's world, many people wonder..." "Let's take a closer look." It also loves to wrap up with a summary nobody asked for: "In conclusion", "Ultimately", or a neat line about how this matters more than ever.
Delete the first sentence and the last sentence of the draft and read it again. Most of the time nothing is lost. If something is, write a new first sentence that starts with the point.

Stop hedging and use plain words
AI text hedges a lot. "This may potentially help." "It could be argued that." "In many cases, it can often be." One hedge is honest when you really aren't sure. Three in a sentence just sounds unsure of everything.
Inflated words are the other giveaway. "Utilize" instead of "use". "Facilitate" instead of "help". "Comprehensive" when you mean "full". "Embark on a journey" when you mean "start". Swap them for the word you'd say to a friend.
Contractions help too. AI drafts often say "do not" and "it is" where people say "don't" and "it's". Unless the piece is very formal, use the contraction.

Add what only you would know
The biggest difference between generic text and human text is detail. A model doesn't know that the meeting ran long, that your client prefers calls, or that you tried the cheaper option first and it broke. You do.
Add one or two of those details to every draft. A real number, a name, a place, a small opinion. It makes the writing yours, and it gives the reader something to hold on to.
Then read it out loud. If you stumble or cringe at a line, rewrite it the way you'd say it.
- Replace a general claim with a specific example
- Use a real number instead of "many" or "significant"
- Say what you think, once, without a hedge
- Cut any sentence that would fit in anyone else's email
How Preener's Humanize does this for you
If you'd rather not do every pass by hand, Preener has a Humanize action. Paste the stiff text, pick a style (Conversational, Professional, Academic or Storytelling) and choose Light, Medium or Heavy for how much it changes. It swaps stock phrases for everyday words, varies the sentence rhythm and drops filler openers and closers.
It keeps your facts, names and numbers, and it won't add opinions or experiences you never had. If you want more, tap Cut the drama, Vary the rhythm or Simpler words. Humanize works in the Preener AI Keyboard on Android, in the Chrome extension and on the web at preener.ai, with one account and free daily AI help. You should still read the result once and add the detail only you know.
Questions, answered
How can I tell if my text sounds like AI?
Read it out loud. Look for stock phrases like "plays a crucial role", sentences that are all the same length, lists of three, a warm-up first line and a tidy summary at the end. If you would never say a line to a person, rewrite it.
What words make writing sound like AI?
Words like utilize, facilitate, comprehensive, landscape, testament, foster, embark and navigate show up far more in AI drafts than in normal writing. Swap them for plain words such as use, help, full, start and handle.
Is it okay to use AI to write and then edit it?
For most everyday writing, yes, as long as the facts are right and you stand behind what it says. Check your school's or employer's rules for assignments and official work, and always add your own details before you send it.
How do I make AI writing sound like me?
Use your own contractions and phrases, cut anything you wouldn't say out loud, and add specific details from your life or work. Keeping a few notes on how you write, such as short sentences or no exclamation marks, helps you edit faster.
