How to fix grammar on Android
Android can fix spelling on its own with the built-in spell checker, and some phones with Gboard also have a proofread button for whole sentences. For full grammar fixes in any app, you can use an AI keyboard that corrects the text right in the box and lets you undo it. Whichever you use, it helps to know the handful of mistakes that show up most in texts.

Option 1: Turn on Android's spell checker
Most Android phones come with a spell checker that underlines misspelled words in red. Tap the word to see suggestions. It catches typos well, but it checks one word at a time, so it won't notice when you write "their" instead of "there" or leave out a word.
If you don't see red underlines, the spell checker may be off. Menu names vary by phone and Android version, so search Settings for "spell checker" if these steps don't match.
- Open Settings.
- On Pixel and stock Android, tap System > Keyboard (or Languages & input on older versions). On Samsung, tap General management.
- Tap Spell checker and turn it on.
- Choose your language and the spell checker you want to use.
Option 2: Use your keyboard's autocorrect and proofread
Your keyboard also fixes words as you type. In Gboard and Samsung Keyboard, autocorrect and suggestions are in the keyboard's own settings. Autocorrect is quick, but it sometimes swaps a word you meant for one you didn't, so read the message once before you send it.
Google has also added a proofread feature to Gboard that checks whole sentences for grammar. According to Google's own help page, it is only available on some phones and in some languages, so you may not have it. If your phone supports it, Google's help page explains where to find it in the Gboard toolbar.
Option 3: Use an AI keyboard that fixes text in any app
An AI keyboard works like your normal keyboard, but it adds buttons that fix or rewrite what you've typed. Because it is the keyboard, it works in every app: messages, email, social media and notes. You don't have to copy text into another app and back.
Look for a few things when you choose one.
- It fixes the text in place, in the box you're typing in.
- It has Undo, in case you prefer your own version.
- It keeps your words and only fixes mistakes, unless you ask for more.
- It stays out of password fields and says clearly what text leaves your phone.
Common grammar mistakes in texts and how to fix them
These are the mistakes that show up most when people type fast on a phone. A spell checker misses most of them because every word is spelled correctly.

Missing capitals and apostrophes

Run-on sentence

I sent the file this morning, so you should have it. Let me know if it doesn't open.
Could of and should of
We could of left earlier, I should of checked the traffic.
We could have left earlier. I should have checked the traffic.
Simple habits that cut grammar mistakes
Tools help, but a few habits catch most of what tools miss.
- Read the message once before you send it, especially the first line.
- Use voice typing for long messages, then check the punctuation.
- Add names and words you use often to your keyboard's dictionary so autocorrect stops changing them.
- For important emails, fix the grammar first and change the tone after.
- Break long messages into short sentences. Most errors hide in long ones.
Fix grammar in any app with Preener AI Keyboard
Preener AI Keyboard is an AI keyboard for Android 7 and newer. Type your message as usual, tap Fix, and your text is corrected right in the box. If you'd rather keep your version, Undo steps back one change at a time. It works in any app where you type.
Fix grammar keeps your own words and tone. When you open the full Fix grammar action, you can choose how much it changes: Light touch fixes only clear mistakes, Standard also fixes awkward grammar and Polish smooths clunky phrasing. You can also pick US or UK spelling. Other actions, such as Professional and Shorten, work the same way.
Word suggestions work on your phone, and text is sent to Preener only when you choose an AI action. AI features never run in password fields. Install it from Google Play, sign in with Google or a code we email you, and the free plan includes AI help every day.
Questions, answered
Does Android have a built-in grammar checker?
Android has a built-in spell checker, which catches misspelled words. Gboard also has a proofread feature for grammar, but Google says it is only available on some phones. For full grammar fixes in every app, you need a grammar app or an AI keyboard.
How do I turn on spell check on Android?
Open Settings and search for "spell checker". On Pixel it is under System > Keyboard, and on Samsung under General management. Turn it on and choose your language.
Why doesn't my phone catch grammar mistakes?
A spell checker only checks whether each word is spelled right. Mistakes like their and there, or a missing comma, use real words, so they slip through. A grammar tool reads the whole sentence.
Can I fix grammar in WhatsApp on Android?
Yes. Any grammar feature built into your keyboard works in WhatsApp, because the keyboard is what you type with. An AI keyboard can fix the message in place before you send it.
